VILNIUS—Today Mazeikiu Nafta and Lithuanian Basketball League (LKL) announced starting cooperation during the season of 2003–2004. The official name of the LKL championship will be changed to the “LKL  Mazeikiu Nafta Cup ” .Mazeikiu Nafta will establish a cup to be awarded to the winner of the first place during the championship of 2003–2004 and a prize fund. The winner of the championship will receive 500 thousand Litas, the winner of the second place—300 thousand Litas, and 100 thousand Litas for the winner of the third place.

According to Paul Nelson English, the General Director of Mazeikiu Nafta, “Financial results of our company today and our plans enable us to realize projects of a bigger scope. We are really proud of an opportunity to support basketball in Lithuania.  Our cooperation with LKL is also related to our attempts to position Mazeikiu Nafta’s brand name in Lithuanian market and the market of the Baltic States.”

The Director of LKL Linas Gilys, has noted, that ” It is an important sign, that financially strong companies like Mazeikiu Nafta become our partners. Working together we will manage to make the game more interesting and to attract more fans. Competition for prizes established by Mazeikiu Nafta will bring additional excitement into the game and will become an additional stimuli for basketball teams, participating in the championship”.
